Although not usually known for its historical adaptations Portugal does have a rich history that can offer a varied assortment of characters and settings for any screenplay one might want to write.
It’s currently showing in the TV screens the adaptation of Miguel Sousa Tavares’s novel Equador, set in the beginning of the 20th century and the last years of the monarchy. The action takes place not only in Portugal but also in India and Brasil and mainly in São Tomé e Principe. It approaches the fragilities of the portuguese empire who is close to an end, facing economical and social crisis and well as political instability. In focus on the extreme passions and feelings of the main characters but also in the problems of the colonies and the human rights.
The main character is Luis Bernardo Valença, charged with a mission by King Carlos to take the post of Governor General of São Tomé and prove to England that there was no slavery in the coffee and cocoa plantations. Soon after his arrival comes David Jameson, the british consul who brings with him his wife Ann. And soon Valença will be developing a violent and forbidden passion for Ann which might further complicate his mission.
The series, with 26 episodes, started Dec 21st. and we’re looking forward to see if it’s as good as it’s been announced.
I haven’t read a book (I made a point about that as I don’t like historical books & I don’t like the author
P) but I’m curious for the series. I think it will drag for too long… I haven’t seen yesterday’s episode yet but the 2nd one didn’t really add anything to the story…
I only saw a bit yesterday so I really can’t comment yet. I plan to read the book at some point, just don’t know when. :-S
