Darcy writes a long letter to Lizzy trying to clear his name from the accusations she made concerning Wickham but admits to separating Bingley from Jane. Why is it that she believes him after showing such a great dislike of him? Or do you think she is still not convinced? When she returns home she is distressed by her sister Lydia’s behaviour, could she be thinking of the want of propriety Mr Darcy accuses her family of? On vacation with her uncle and aunt she visits Pemberley where the housekeeper has only good words to describe Darcy. It is with great surprise that she meets him while walking in the gardens but they end up talking with each other with great civility and showing a hint of their attraction.

Lizzy and the Gardiners are invited to dine at Pemberley. She becomes more attracted to the Darcy she is learning to know and we cannot miss how Darcy awaits so eagerly for her opinions. Meanwhile, Lizzy receives the news that her younger sister, Lydia has eloped with Wickam and they return home in a hurry. When all seems solved Lizzy regrets confiding in Darcy as she believes he now thinks ill of her without knowing Darcy was the one who brought about the happy ending.

The Wickams return to Longbourn and Lizzy learns of Mr Darcy’s role in her sister’s marriage. At the same time the Bingleys return to Netherfield and after some hesitation, Charles proposes to Jane and is happily accepted. A few days later Lizzy is surprised with a visit from Lady Catherine de Bourgh who demands explanations about the rumors believing a upcoming marriage between her nephew and Miss Bennett. Do you think at this point she believes they will still have an opportunity? When Darcy comes to visit with Bingley she finally thanks him for all his done to her family thus leading him to propose once more. Do you think he was waiting for a different answer from his first time ?
Episode 4 is one of my favorite of this serie and not only because of Mr Darcy’s wet shirt.
I truly enjoyed Lizzy’s visit to Derbyshire and specially to Pemberley! The house is beautiful, the park is idyllic and when they both unexpectedly meet, I just couldn’t keep smiling watching an uncomfortable Darcy caught in a most delightful situation (for us, of course!). I really had the feeling that they both feel that their story could maybe have another turn. When Lizzy turn around in the carriage while she is leaving, her face shows that her feelings for Mr. Darcy are already growing.
I think that Lizzie believes his letter because it makes so much sense, how could it not be true. Certainly, it makes her mad at first, but once she’s over that she sees that it all fits. Also, I think by that stage Lizzie knows that whateever else she may think Darcy is, she knows him to be honest.
When Lizzie gets home and sees Lydia, I think that she sees all that Darcy said about her family being illustrated for the truth.
The meeting and walk at Pemberley is my favourtie part of the series. I’m not sure why, there are more romantic and dramatic bits, but there’s just something about it that makes me want to settle in my seat and say “ok, they’ve finished all the stuffing around with each other, now we can get on with it!”
I think that by the time Lizzie has the visit from Lady C, she has sorted herself out and is secretly hoping that things might yet turn out well for Darcy and herself.
I feel exactly the same, Dee.
The way Darcy acts when he gets out of his house running everywhere trying to find Elizabeth, the look on his face is just so revealing. There’s no doubt this man is looking for the woman he adores! He actually smiles when she tells him that she likes his home. It’s one of the few moments where we can actually say he is sweet.
The confrontation with Lady de Bourgh is also a great moment and compared to the P&P movie is much more powerful. Judi Dench is one of my favorite actresses but Barbara Leigh-Hunt personifies aristocratic arrogance in it’s every possible way.
I think it also helps to convince Lizzie of Wickham’s less than honourable intentions the fact she finds out more stories about him. Remember when she returns she learns the girl he was paying court to was removed from his influence by a family member who discovered he was a fortune hunter.
I also love the visit to Pemberley, for the first time they have a serious conversation without any pride or prejudice involved…
The dive, the dive. Come on, it’s worth watching this series just to see Mr. Darcy’s wet shirt.
I’ll write some more tomorrow, promise.
That’s true, syrin. The wet shirt scene is exceedingly fine!
That anonymous comment above was me (not a lurker!)- I’m not sure why it didn’t put my name in!
LOL Absolutely, Syrin! That wet shirt is soooooo sexy!
Something more about the dive scene, Mr Darcy’s face when he meets Lizzy is worth millions! He even asks her twice how are her parents and her sisters…LOL The poor man, caught in his very white and very thin wet shirt.
Also a scene I really enjoy in episode 5 is the dinner at Pemberley. Darcy’s look during Lizzy’s piano forte performance and her conversation with Georgiana are so intense! Of course, the spitful comment of Caroline Bingley just brought the couple even more close.
I don’t know about you but I really enjoyed the Gardiners! They seemed like very warm people who really care for her niece.
Another big difference between this serie and the movie is Wickham. While here we feel his influence, his presence, I hardly remember him in the recent version…
I agree, Alex. In this series I think Wickham is well done – just the right balance of smarmy and personable for the viewer to understand how a person (even a sensible person) could get taken in by him. In the recent film, he’s very light-weight.
Thinking about it very critically, I think most of the characters in the recent film were light-weight. The only bit where I recall any major impact was at the end of the proposal scene (so badly adapted that a P&P fan would cry) when it looked like Darcy was going to kiss Lizzie – like he was just going to grab her, then he pulled himself back.
The thing that I truly loved about this series is that it felt so REAL. Often when I’ve read and loved a book and then go to a movie of it I’m sitting there thinking “No, it doesn’t look like that”, or “No! he/she doesn’t look/behave like that” etc. I didn’t think that here.
I totally agree Dee. It was one of the first times where I actually enjoyed something after having read the original.
Couldn’t agree more, Dee! The movie was such a huge disappointement. Most of the parts I love in the book were “forgotten” and then the other’s were changed… That proposal scene was a disaster, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it. Everything was wrong: the place, the expressions, the words,…*sigh* I can understand why Knightley and Macfayden were chosen to play Lizzy and Darcy, but to me they were not a good choice. They also didn’t had any chemistry which made things a bit more complicated…
The only character I enjoyed in this movie was Jane (Rosamund Pike) who was still very far from Susannah Harker’s performance and sweet smile…
More! More! More!
Loved , loved this series. The Pemberley scenes were also my favourites. When Darcy returns on his horse, you can see his loneliness on his face, almost as though regretting why he returned alone. Everything changes when he runs into Lizzy. For me, the best scene is when he comes rushing down the stairs to find Lizzy before she and her uncle and aunt leave Pemberley. His love for her just shines through.
