After some discussion, we all thought it would be fun to make a Top 10 of our Favourite Historical Heroes in series and movies. At first we were aiming for a Top 3 until we finally admitted it was an impossible task, as it is we still struggled to choose just 10. Who are those complex, strong men who you’ve come across? We’re looking forward to hear about your favourites and why you chose them. There’s no particular order in this list, it would be beyond us to actually pick just one. And if you have others to suggest we look forward to finding new heroes! After all everyone needs a hero once in a while! Or 2! Or 10!

Fitzwilliam Darcy by Colin Firth in BBC’s Pride & Prejudice. Most P&P fans will say that Colin Firth is the perfect Darcy, the arrogant, proud and sexy aristocrat who becomes more human and kind through the love of the lively Miss Elizabeth Bennet. Who can forget his clumsy first proposal and his shy second one? |

Count Dracula by Gary Oldman in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Cultured, mysterious, elegant and charming he possesses what humankind has always looked for, eternal life. But what is life without love? Without a soul? For the love of one woman he is capable of anything, even death. The closest adaptation to Bram Stoker’s story brought to life with a stunning interpretation by Gary Oldman. |

Edward Rochester by Toby Stephens in Jane Eyre. Dark, mysterious, strong, arrogant, complex… He is the perfect icon of the romantic hero. Stephens gives him a more human dimension and lots of charisma things that were missing in the previous adaptations. Sometimes he’s almost overwhelming ! |

Frederick Wentworth by Rupert Penry-Jones in Persuasion. |

Vicomte Valmont by Jonh Malkovich in Dangerous Liaisons. A seducing, amoral, deceitful and vain man, Vicomte de Valmont, is every lady’s nightmare and every woman’s dream. There isn’t a woman alive that wouldn’t fall for his charms. Or is there? Once more John Malkovich embodies a dubious character, one of his specialties, someone that we hate to love. |

John Thornton by Richard Armitage in North & South. A self made man trying to gain Margaret Hale’s love has a rocky path to follow until she accepts him. He scowls and smolders but he also shows he has a loving side. Richard Armitage is perfect in this role with all that contained sensuality and disturbing eyes. |

George Baines by Harvey Keitel in The Piano. He is not handsome or elegant but how could we resist a man who understands a woman’s needs as well as he does. Each touch, each word, each look, each gesture seems to be exactly what Ada craved for. A totally unexpected soul mate who leaves us breathless. |

Angelo Pardi by Olivier Martinez in The Horseman on the Roof. Idealistic, strong, charismatic and protective this young Italian colonel charms you in a way that you cannot ignore. In the end, you can only sigh each time you see how he looks at Pauline. |

Jack Sparrow by Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean. The perfect anti-hero who conquered our hearts with his wit, eccentricity, charm, humor and sexy look. Johnny Depp does an exceptional and original performance and we cannot help but to fall helplessly for him. |

Colonel Brandon by Alan Rickman in Sense & Sensibility. Handsome and rather charismatic, he is one of the most captivating characters in Ang Lee’s movie. While Brandon is always seen as a dull man, Rickman gives him more glamour and conquers our hearts more easily than Marianne’s. |

I just came her to give a huge sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhh for Colin Firth, Toby Stephens, Alan Rickman and the Vicomte Valmont…………
Hmmm just realised I forgot to suggest Sean Bean as Boromir and Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings…
LOL! You just came here to drool I see!
So another Valmont fan, I was right to nominate him then.
Hey, there’s a couple of guys here I don’t know…
hum… must watch/read asap
Who? Who?
Count Dracula
Count Rochester (only read the childrens’ version of the book)
Frederick Wentworth
Vicomte Valmont
Angelo Pardi
First of all you HAVE to read the adult version of Jane Eyre!
And then prepare yourself for some excellent hours in front of the TV with all the other films and series you haven’t seen.
Fantasma,
If you like Toby Stephens you HAVE to see The Tenant of Wildfell Hall:

He is younger and so irresistible!!
Syrin,
You have to see all those movies/series but Ana O. is right, the latest Jane Eyre adaptation is simply amazing!
I only “met” Toby Stephens in 007, and he looks great in costume too!
And yes, I only came here to drool
I haven’t heard of Rupert Penry-Jones (another series I have at home to be seen…), the others I saw most of them or at least know the name or series. But Harvey Keitel?!?!!? Blergh. Give me Boromir any time
I know, I know girls. I’m counting on all of you to give me pointers on which historical series can’t be missed.
*tsk tsk tsk* Did you saw The Piano, Fantasma? He cannot be compared physically to a Toby Stephens but his character in this movie is absolutelly breathtaking. Not all our heroes have to be drop dead gorgeous, right?!
Oh Fantasma you have to watch Persuasion, both Rupert Penry-Jones and Sally Hawkins are great in it. And I looove the story!! And hoooray another Boromir fan! ;-D
Wow, what a great topic!
I’ve not seen Count Dracula, but I think Gary Oldman is great, I especially liked him in Imortal Beloved – he played Beethoven brilliantly.
I haven’t seen Dangerous Liasons for years, clearly I need to re-watch it.
The Piano – Yah! Go New Zealand film making. Harvey is great. He’s currently on an advertisement here in NZ for NZ made beer!! It’s a cool ad too!
I’ve never heard of The Horseman on the Roof. I shall have to try and track that one down.
I confess, I didn’t like Pirates of the Caribbean. I don’t think I even got to watch it through. Odd, because I usually like pirate themed movies and books.
I love Alan Rickman. I had forgotten about him in Sense and Sensibility. I shall have to re-watch it. The movie of his I especially like is Truly, Madly, Deeply. A great watch.
Dee.
I saw The Piano. But I don’t like Harvey Keitel, so….
But you’re right about the movie and the heroes. Even though it helps a lot when they are cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuute!
It helps but only if he is a good actor.
*big tsk tsk tsk* This is not about Harvey Keitel but his role, Georges Baines is such a charismatic man. However, I do understand it’s harder to like a role when you do not like the actor.
Btw, did you watch already North & South?
pip
Dee,
Do you have some favorite heroes beside the ones we have here?:) You have to watch Sense & Sensibility again, Rickman is irresistible!!*sigh*
Hey I never heard of Truly Madly Deeply… off to investigate!
Alex,
I’m sure that I do have some other favourites, but I can’t seem to think of them at the moment! I’m not very good with movies – I don’t recall them very well, and seem to forget actors/actresses names (yet I’m quite good recalling details of books). The only one that springs to mind as another quite romantic movie, with a lovely hero, is Ladyhawke, starring Michelle Pffiefer (not sure how that’s spelt) and the blond guy with light blue eyes! I haven’t seen it for years though, so I’m not sure how I would feel about it as a ‘grown up’!!!
Regarding S&S, I’m in the process of tracking down a copy for a re-watch!
Ana T,
In my opinion, Truly Madly Deeply has got such lovely characters. It’s kind of a sad movie, but not! It’s very hard to explain. However, there is this bit in it where the lead actress is crying and it’s so real, and so messy, the acting just really impressed me. It’s like, anyone who’se had a major crying session could look at this scene and say ‘yes, that’s what it’s like’! Also, the music is lovely.
The blond guy in Lady Hawke is Rutger Hauer, I loooooved that movie
I’ll have to look for Truly Madly Deeply then, thanks for the recommendation Dee!
I must admit I am crazy about Viggo as Aragorn and might have switched him with John Malkovich, who plays a creepy bastard personified in my book, but who is no hero in my book.
Whoops, two in my books. I should learn to edit.
Ms Place, welcome to our blog! Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn is indeed an extraordinary hero.
Can I just say that I just love your blog!
Well, shucks (she says, while modestly blushing,) such high praise makes my day. I have linked this wonderful blog to both Jane Austen Today and Jane Austen’s World, and look forward to following your thoughts about The Complete Jane Austen.
I looooove your blog too! In fact I just spent the last half hour just browing through your posts. Lovely! I’ll check back often.
I lurve Toby Stephens he totally rocks. Having read Jane eyre a million times[well close enough] and then watched the series and watched it again repeatedly[ my hubbie reckons i am a total head case-like i care] i am absloutely besotted by Toby, he is sexy, gorgeous, talented and hot, hot, hot, the guy has it all going on.
If you haven’t watched Persuasion (2007) you are really missing out. Rupert’s Wentworth is amazingly sexy! I can’t get enough of him!!! Ooh la la!!!
i mean from 2009 listen for once
I love Jack Sparrow!
